Adopt a Farmer Program
Showing Students how Oregon is “Rooted. Green.
Vital.”
The Adopt a Farmer program launched in 2011-2012 in 3 Beaverton
School District middle schools. The program enables 6th, 7th
and 8th graders to connect with an Oregon farmer for an entire
school year and experience life on the farm firsthand. In the
program's first year, it reached 400 students.
Three Oregon farm operations volunteered their time for the
cause, including Doerfler Farms, Willamette Egg Farms and Pearmine
Farms. The program is designed so that each farmer visits the
classroom once a quarter.
With such a positive response from the teachers, students and
farmers, ABC plans to expand the Adopt a Farmer program to schools
across the state. The success of the program is allowing it to
expand to 12 schools during the 2012/13 academic year in Albany,
Beaverton, Eugene, Salem, and Silverton. It’s estimated that 1,200
middle school students will participate in the program.
