Safety Tips
June
Tip:
Sun rise and sun set are high risk periods for moving farm
machinery. Avoid moving equipment during those periods whenever
possible. If absolutely necessary to be out on the roads then,
provide escort vehicles and take extra precautions to avoid a wreck.
May
Tip:
ABC Safety Tips for this month will address tractors, which are
involved in about half of the fatal farm injuries we see.
- Lack of experience is a common hazard. Train well, and then
have new operators practice in a safe location until they develop
basic skills.
- Long-time drivers have their own risk factors! That’s one
reason why OSHA requires annual refresher training for all
employees who use tractors.
- Farm owner-operators are another high-risk group. Lead by your
actions, and set a good example for kids and employees.
April Tip:
Spring
spraying is the subject of this month’s ABC Safety Tips!
- We all know the label is the law, and ignorance of
the law is no excuse. Read and follow those instructions!
- Require any employees to understand and follow those instructions too. It’s
not good enough to just tell them, they must be actively
supervised.
- Expect the unexpected! Nobody plans to make a mistake but in
many cases that’s what the protective gear is really for.
March
Tip:
Nursery shipping season is here! Avoid the “too busy for
safety” trap. Good ergonomic practices, equipment operator training,
and effective supervision are well worth the time required.
February Tip: Livestock
-
Producers take all sorts of precautions to prevent Mad Cow,
but it’s hard to prevent Angry Bovine! Be alert, and always have a
plan to escape.
- Watch for Mad Cowboy – or Cowgirl! Make time to calm down if
needed. It takes patience and a clear head to handle large animals
safely.
